Northwestern certainly likes to keep its fans on the edge of their seats. The No. 9 Wildcats (12-4, 5-1 Big Ten) extended their winning streak to six with weekend overtime wins over No. 22 Iowa (5-10, 1-5) and No. 24 Massachusetts (11-5). NU’s resume now includes victories over six ranked opponents.
Puck Pentenga directs traffic. The junior midfielder and the Wildcats saw their season end with a 3-0 loss to Michigan in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday. Northwestern was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament Sunday with a 3-0 loss to No. 3 Michigan in the quarterfinals. The No. 10 Wildcats (15-7, 6-2 Big Ten) began the weekend with a 3-2 overtime win against No. 8 Louisville (14-8) before falling to the Wolverines, who improved their win streak to 18 games and ended NU’s season.
Puck Pentenga battles for the ball. The junior midfielder and the Wildcats will battle top-seeded Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals Friday. Michigan hasn’t felt the sting of defeat in nearly two months. Northwestern will look to put an end to the Wolverines’ 14-game winning streak when it takes the field for Friday’s Big Ten semifinal in East Lansing.
Alex Chatt hits a serve. Chatt and the Wildcats rolled through the NCAA Regional with two 4-0 wins this weekend. Northwestern punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 thanks to dominating wins over Buffalo and Kansas State in the regional round it hosted this weekend. The 14th-seeded Wildcats (23-5, 11-0 Big Ten) trounced both the Bulls (17-4, 8-0 Mid-American) and Kansas State (15-11, 4-5 Big 12) by 4-0 scores in front of large home crowds in Evanston.
Maddie Lipp watches her shot. Lipp and fellow senior Erin Larner’s doubles match loss put Northwestern down early to Duke. Northwestern’s NCAA Tournament run and 2018 season came to an end with a loss to Duke in the Round of 16 on Thursday. The 14th-seeded Wildcats (23-6, 11-0 Big Ten) were eliminated from the tournament by the third-seeded Blue Devils (26-3, 13-1 ACC) by a match score of 4-0.
The dominant doubles duo of Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp that entered the NCAA Doubles Championships as the fourth-best pair in the country almost never existed. Coming into being after coach Claire Pollard paired the two together during their senior years, Lipp and Larner’s partnership was possible only because of a shoulder injury that forced Lipp to redshirt her sophomore year.
